Another Top Ten For Byrne
Shullsburg, WI – Coming off of a great run in the USAC Coca-Cola Night Before the 500 at IRP Memorial Day weekend, David Byrne and his Byrne racing team were looking to improve on that the following week at the Grundy County Speedway.
On Saturday June 3, the Byrne Racing Team made the trip from Shullsburg, Wisconsin to the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Illinois. The “50-Lap Salute To 7-Time USAC Champion Mel Kenyon” was the second in a series of eight events this season to be co-sanctioned between the UMARA, USAC and the Michigan based WOWMS midget auto racing clubs.
After qualifying ninth quick out of 28 cars, with a quick lap of 14.820, Byrne would start in the third of three heat races, where he would have to finish fifth or better to make the show. With some minor adjustments to the car, and his driving style, David was able to finish fifth to take the final transfer spot in his heat, but they still had some work to do to improve for the feature.
In the 50-lap feature Byrne started ninth; and with some pretty good equipment ahead of him, he had his work cut out. With only one caution on the 35th circuit, the pace was quick and the traffic was heavy in the closing laps. Byrne was able to drive his Stealth/Fontana, Truck Country, Tricor Insurance, Bytec Inc. midget up to as high a sixth place where he would finish.
Afterwards team owner Steve Byrne said, “This is the first time we’ve run this Regional Tire and we kind of struggled tonight with our set-ups, so we were just a tick off all night. Then with about 15 laps to go in the feature David had to take it easy, because he lost a brake pad, and still (Bobby) Santos was the only one to get by him. So, all things considered were pretty happy have a 6th place finish here.”
Byrne finished sixth behind first-time feature winner Jimmy Anderson, 4-time UMARA National midget champ Steve Thinnes, Bryan Olson, USAC Night Before the 500 winner Bobby Santos and Josh Lane.
The Byrne Racing Team will take off a couple of weeks to do some promotions for the Milwaukee Mile IRL/USAC weekend coming up in July, including a stop at Madison International Speedway on Friday June 16th for the USAC Ford Focus Midget and Hoosier Outlaw Sprint Series event. Then on June 24th they will be back at the Grundy County Speedway for the 3rd Annual UMARA Pennzoil Henry Ales Ez-Lube Don Carter Sr. / Jim Anderson Classic looking for there first feature win.
